Hong Kong’s tallest building offers spectacular views

December 26, 2010 - Elmer W. Cagape

In case you are not yet aware, the tallest building in Hong Kong, the International Commerce Centre, is also the fourth tallest in the world. And if that lofty reputation is not enough, the building holds the distinction as the location of the world’s tallest hotel, The Ritz Carlton.

For a sneak preview of the world’s tallest hotel, here’s a video:

sky100 is at the 100th floor of ICC (left skyscraper). At right is IFC 2, previously the tallest building in Hong Kong.

Being the tallest skyscraper gives the ICC some bragging rights to set up the highest indoor observation deck in the city. The sky100, a 360-degree observation deck located at the 100th floor of ICC and just above the Kowloon MTR station, will become the latest tourist attraction Hong Kong has to offer. At 393 meters high, sky100 observatory is a bit taller than that of Taipei 101 which is about 385 meters above the ground. An estimated 3,000 to 5,000 visitors every day are expected once the facility opens in April. Online ticket bookings will be available in March.

Such views offer an alternative to that of The Peak which is sometimes bothered by low visibility. sky100 offers 360 degree views of the city, from the Central business district to Tsing Ma bridge and Kowloon cityscape to Lion Rock hills further north. However such an alternative comes at a price. The entrance fee is now HK$125 (US$16) for adults and HK$90 (US$11.50) for children and elderly visitors.

In comparison with other attractions, sky100′s rates are competitive. Taipei 101 charges HK$103 (US$13.20) and the much taller Shanghai World Finance Centre’s rate is pegged at HK$175 (US$22.50). For families, it is cheaper to get a ticket (HK$305 for two adults and a child). For walk-in visitors, same-day tickets cost slightly higher so a prior booking is recommended.
