Destination: Feelux Lighting Museum (Gyeonggi-do)

July 23, 2012 - Chris Backe

IT’S not every day you get this far off the tourist trail.

Hundreds of exhibits document some of the fancier lights, while others show a more historical perspective. While not incredibly bizarre yet, it is a museum about lighting – and as you can see above, it starts with a historical overview of lights.

Some of the earlier lights in the modern era.

Something you probably won’t see commonly throughout Korea.

While I can’t see many of these hanging in houses around Korea, part of me wonders what an mid-twentieth-century Korean house would have been lit by.

Once you’ve exited from the ‘history of lights’ wing, some more modern designs await you.

The more unusual designs are in one of the first-floor wings – presenting some fiber-optic lights and the gorgeous bokeh that comes with using a pro lens.

One walkway that led to a connected building featured the winners of a photo contest – the theme of ‘Light Pollution’ apparently didn’t set off anyone’s irony detector.

A number of futuristic rooms are shown in the basement – using the company’s own colorful lights for light therapy or to replicate the sun’s natural color shift.

There’s very little English around, and it seems the people weren’t used to seeing a foreigner meandering and taking pictures through the museum. As I was leaving, a group of elementary schoolers were unloading for their own tour through the fanciful lights – and probably through one of the sections dedicated to children. The fact that it’s inside (and air-conditioned) may move this place up your list now that it’s June.

Worth the visit:

Directions to the Feelux Lighting Museum: head to Yangju station on the far northern part of Seoul’s line 1. Take exit 2, cross the street and walk to the bus stop. Jump on bus 32, 32-1, or 35 and ride it for about 20 minutes. You’ll need to listen carefully for the bus stop – depending on the bus, it might be 풀무골 (pul-mu-gol) or 섬말 (seom-mal). Either way, it’ll be the one with the GS-25 on the left side.

Once off the bus, cross the street, turn right, and walk about 100 meters. Bear left up a side road, then follow the road as it curves left. The street leads into the Feelux parking lot. Smile at the security guy, then bear left up the hill and around the corner. Take the first right, and look right – the first building is the museum.
