THE House of Mangaldas Giridhardas is a real oasis of calm and taste in the Gujurati capital of Ahmedabad. It’s also the only boutique heritage hotel. While it caters primarily for business travellers it would also suit foodies, families and those seeking a relaxing break. Here you’ll not only find excellent modern equipped rooms, but an indoor swimming pool, a variety of acclaimed restaurants, excellent spa treatments and some of the most exquisitely decorated suites in India.
The House of MG is still owned by the same family that built it all the way back in 1924, although they have recently returned it to its former glory and added beautiful touches of décor, furniture and services to really make this hotel stand out. And it’s really the old world charm in the wooden staircases, the ceramic mosaics and marble flooring that make it so special.
What makes it special?
The House of MG advertises on their website that visiting is “like coming home” and they aren’t wrong. For all the plush furnishings there’s also a sense that this once was a home and staff do their best to provide attentive service that still makes you feel that way.
The location right in the city centre also makes it the perfect place to get around if you have business appointments to attend or want to do some local sightseeing.
What to expect?
There are only 14 rooms at the House of Mangaldas so there’s definitely not the feeling of being lost in the crowd when you check in here. Everything is spacious from the size of the bed to the size of the room, the bathrooms and even the DVD library. And there’s also not the sameness of the rooms you find in big hotels – everything is different, reflecting much of the way the house was originally used also.
What is there to do?
Thanks to its central location the city of Ahmedabad is right outside the door. You can head out to see a variety of monuments and local museums just around the corner, or venture further afield with cars and drivers provided by the hotel to bird or wildlife sanctuaries.
If you are seeking to relax head to either of the hotel’s dining options for some fine cuisine or simply sink into the indoor pool.
