IT’S the most wonderful time of the year, with kids jingle-belling and… you get the gist. If you think that Christmas isn’t really Christmas without the winter chill, the relentless snow and the smell of pine in the air – you’re obviously long overdue on a trip to Asia. We bring to you some of the best places to let your hair down and soak up the sun (yes, the sun) this winter.
BALI, INDONESIA
An Indonesian island located between Java and Lombok, Bali is famous for its beautiful blue waters, extensive networks of coral reefs, white shores and black sand beaches. Bali is often the destination of choice for honeymooning and eloping couples. Adventure junkies can have their bit of fun rafting down the rapids of the Ayung river. Hiking enthusiasts should look no further than climbing to the peak of Penelokan Kintamani. It is a two hour hike, but the view from the top proves to be well worth the effort. For the uninitiated, Bali is also a land rife with temples. The Ulutawa temple located at the southwestern tip of the landmass enables visitors to view one of the most magical sunsets imaginable. Entry into this temple demands a fee, and for a little extra money, you can also participate in a traditional Balinese dance that is performed on the premises. The Gunung Kawi temple dates back to around 1049, and is the best place to indulge in meditation and a spot of soul searching. When it comes to cuisine, tourists have a luxury of choice between traditional Indonesian restaurants and other eateries that aim at whetting the western palate. Bali is also a great place to party, and the nightclubs are loved by locals and visitors alike. However, a warning is in order, avoid wearing flashy clothes and jewellery, the Balinese monkeys are famous for their nimble fingers and pick-pocketing ways.
