With period furniture and architecture, charming lawns and sweeping mountain views a stay at the Carlton Plaisance is indeed a step back into an age that has all but passed in Mussoorie today. Constructed in a Victorian style and situated amidst the greenery overlooking the magnificent Doon valley as well as the Northern part of the vast Himalayan ranges, its’ rooms are well decorated with historic furnishings that encourage guests to feel the pulse of old Mussoorie.
The Carlton Plaisance is far from just your average Indian hotel. The owners have made an effort to retain its old world charm and French and British architectural roots, along with the ancient antique furniture and beautiful gardens. To that they have added a heartfelt hospitality that they easily extend to all guests be they families, writers, artists or even the famed Sir Edmund Hilary who once stayed here.
It’s easy to see what has kept drawing some of these same visitors back year after year. Once you’ve stayed with Anu and Ajit, you’ll also see why they get so many repeat guests, and you’ll also fall in love with Mussoorie which remains one of the most desirable hillside destinations in India where you can escape the maddening traffic, pollution or chaos of other locations.
While the Carlton Plaisance is very comfortable it has a rustic unaffected charm that perhaps purveyors of high end hotels won’t appreciate. Visitors ultimately come here to enjoy nature and the homely hospitality.
Built in the late 1800s the Carlton Plaisance property covers four acres and features gardens, an orchard and plenty of incredible views of snowy Himalayas. You can relax in the garden with a book, order in a pot of chai and watch the views from your bedroom window or enjoy a night time bon fire.
Each of the rooms at Carlton Plaisance is fully furnished and very spacious with high ceilings, huge beds and enormous bay windows or large doors.
All the rooms open out onto either the garden or orchard meaning you are never too far from the beautiful greenery so prevalent in Mussoorie or the snow views of the Himalaya. These large windows and doors also make the rooms seem light and airy. Each room also features running hot water and cable television.
Deluxe Rooms: The deluxe rooms open out onto the gardens, perfect for kids to play in or to sit out and read a book.
Suites: The suites are the epitome of comfort with fully furnished bedrooms and sitting rooms with views of the mountains through enormous bay windows.
Cottage: The one room cottage is completely private for those wanting a little more seclusion. The bedroom and sitting area are housed together but it is spacious and comfortable. There are outdoor sitting areas around the cottage.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available at the hotel and all food can be customized to individual tastes. The cuisine features Garwali vegetarian, Chinese, Continental and Indian vegetarian food.
There are also numerous eateries in close proximity to the hotel.
Mussoorie brims with opportunities to explore with wonderful temples, churches, bird watching and great walks to undertake.
The owners Anu and Ajit will be happy to fill you in on the activities available.
"Carlton Plaisance is not a hotel. It’s an experience. A rare leaf you find in nursery of your life, you treasure it. You put it in a glass bottle, you cork it. An old vintage wine that leaves perpetual residue on your tongue. One savors it gradually, bit by bit, in time." Rakesh Dogra.
"The resort is managed by a wonderful couple, Anu & Ajit Singh and they add a lot of warmth to what is already a very 'warm' location. Carlton Plaisance is probably Mussoorie's best kept secret: it is wonderfuly located, less than 2kms away from the city center (an easy walk) and yet tucked away from the hustle-bustle. The grounds are extensive and well maintained with a beautiful view of snow-capped peaks (the greater himalayan range) across the gorge, right from your portico! The building is steeped in character, the olde den room in particular. I like the manner in which the old world furniture and artefacts are preserved, as well as hunting trophies (ancient ones: i was reassured that these wwere all 2 generations old!)" Neil.
Guests can expect to pay between From USD $55 and USD $90 per night depending on room selection and seasonal variations.
