After a top-to-bottom renovation, this historic Singapore building now houses a modern boutique hotel with a surfeit of luxury and high tech, all just minutes away from Orchard Road. The hotel is set at a distance from Singapore’s hectic activity, within the protective cocoon of the Fort Canning Park. The MRT and buses take only five minutes to reach on foot, with Orchard Road and its shopping being only a few stops away.
The location of the Hotel Fort Canning is steeped in history; the hill it stands on used to house the palaces of old Malay royalty, then became the site of a colonial fort (the namesake of both the hotel and the nearby park). The Hotel building was constructed in the 1920s, and served as the general headquarters for the British forces in Asia.
The building has undergone a complete transformation from stodgy old military GHQ to modern boutique hotel; where the staff rooms used to be, you’ll now find 86 luxurious guestrooms furnished with Poltrona Frau furniture, a large LED TV that accesses a smart content platform, a Nespresso machine with specialty coffees and teas, and interactive panels that control air conditioning, lights, and curtains with a touch.
The grounds have been enhanced with the addition of two swimming pools and a Glass House that holds the THANN spa, a fitness center, and the hotel’s conference & ballroom facilities. On the ground floor, an Asian bistro serves regional cuisine in cute tiffin boxes.
Deluxe Room: These 35 sq m bedrooms come with a bathroom furnished with a picture window overlooking either the park or the city skyline.
Deluxe Garden Room: Similar to the Deluxe Room, although their location on the ground floor allows them their own private garden and sun deck.
Premium Room: These 40 sq m rooms have a separate living room, with views overlooking the Fort Canning Park.
Premium Luxe Room: Similar to the Premium Room, but larger (up to 50 sq m).
Suite: The Hotel Fort Canning offers two suites – the Majapahit and Governor’s Suite; guests have the run of a generous 94 sq m space, with a separate meeting room and living room, and a bathroom with a whirlpool bath.
Gattopardo specializes in contemporary Southern Italian cuisine, with wood-fired pizza, fresh seafood cooked Sicilian-style, pasta, and an extensive wine list.
Tisettanta Lounge is located in the center of the hotel’s receiving atrium, and serves up Italian-influenced cocktails in a cozy, modern setting.
The Glass House bistro serves dishes from Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, all prepared with a contemporary twist. The floor-to-ceiling glass walls permit a panoramic view of the forest around the Fort Canning Park.
THANN Sanctuary spa provides four Thai-inspired rooms and one couple suite, with a range of treatments based on THANN’s natural therapies.
A fitness center 240 sq m in size features leeding-edge TechnoGym equipment and views over the park while you sweat. If you prefer to take your exercise in the water, you can try one of the hotel’s two outdoor swimming pools.
The Hotel Fort Canning provides one-hour guided tours through the nearby park’s heritage trail, which culminates in a visit to a live archaeological dig.
"The high tech rooms show that they no a traveller likes to be spoilt with refinements and that is more important than a bedroom to go ballroom dancing in.
However, although my bedroom was small, the bathroom was great. Anyway, the high technology interface meant lights and curtains and temperature was all easily controlled and you could forgo the usual hunting around for the right button." - Ben W. U.K
“We stopped over at the hotel for one night when travelling from London to Sydney, via Singapore. Very impressive hotel with the latest technology for the lights and blinds in the room. All activated by a bedside touchscreen control panel. A bit off-putting that the bedroom had no windows but the bathroom had a floor-to ceiling window overlooking the city.
The lap pool and leisure pool were both great and big enough to do some decent laps. All in all, we had a very relaxing time there. The hotel restaurants served western and asian cuisine, so no need to venture out into the city.” - Jenny L.
“Checking into the Hotel Fort Canning feels like entering a bubble in time and space - you step through the glass doors separating the hotel lobby from the rest of Singapore, and the island-state's hustle-and-bustle blink out.
You check into one of their comfortable guestrooms on an upper floor, and from one of the large windows overlooking the Fort Canning Park, Singapore's high-rises stand faintly beyond the treeline, as if from very far away.” - Tom H.
