Character, Heritage & Style

Hotel Penaga, is located in the heart of Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The hotel was converted from a cluster of 15 pre-war terraces and shophouses, facing Hutton Lane, Transfer Road and Clarke Street, into a heritage boutique hotel that maintains the character of the heritage zone while meeting the highest modern expectations.

Each room or suite is individually furnished with antique cabinets, benches and chairs from China.

Modern sofas and what we call "prima donna" chairs, the dramatic classics of mid 20th century design, are in most rooms, along with an original contemporary art piece, natural history prints and maps that relate to Penang.

The collection is growing all the time thanks to the artist in residence suite at the top of the hotel.

Every bathroom has a Jacuzzi spa bath and a separate shower. Toiletries are locally made, from craftsmen and women who specialize in the fragrances and products of the region.

The choice of accommodation includes the Clarke Terrace houses, the Transfer Suite and the Hutton Rooms.

The Cinnamon - Overlooking the swimming pool and straight down the garden path, the Cinnamon is great for events and casual dining.  Most guests are keen to explore the fantastic street food that Georgetown is famous for, but when choice exhaustion sets in and you are looking for an easy night in with good restaurant food and a glass or two of excellent wine, then Cinnamon is the place to be.

The Tanglung Bar - A Malay name with a Chinese ring, this represents the best of GeorgeTown’s cultural mix.  The glass lanterns from Guangzhou gave the bar its name, and although it’s tiny it’s a great place for a pick me up or a late Irish coffee, and for smokers there is lounging space outside on the five foot way.

Extra facilities include a library, swimming pool, garden, spa, a craft and gift shop and a business center.

This is truly an exceptional hotel. The hotel is set on the crossroads of two busyish roads within walking distance of Georgetown.

The staff are extremely friendly and the customer services is as you would expect in 5* hotels. Breakfast is plentiful and of a high quality. The juices for example actually taste of the fruit not watered down as in many other hotels. The staff at breakfast are attentitive and will serve coffee and tea at your table.

The grounds are small but very attractive with the usual lush foliage. The swimming pool is about 10m by 4m and is set next to the restaurant, it has limited sunbeds.

The decor inside the hotel is gorgeous, a lot of money has been spent and the attention to detail is very high. The artwork on the walls may not be to everyone's taste but is tasteful and interesting.  Ang-Greg, UK

Went here on advise of a friend and it was worth while! We booked the Clarke Terrace which suits 4 adults in 2 separate bedrooms.

Downstairs a beautiful living area and even a little kitchen, outside a jacuzzi which was superb. Upstairs 2 rooms, 1 with twin beds and bathroom with shower, 1 with kingsize bed and bathroom with 2 showers and also a little balcony (no chairs on there).

The house is filled with Chinese antique furniture and different types of art. The book in the room explains what all the art is, and also explains what kind of plants are growing in the hotel garden. Swimming pool was nice, with glass wall and a jet stream you can turn on.

For the spa I was a little disappointed as I wanted to book the pedicure and they told me it is 'not available', although it was mentioned on the website and in the hotel book.

The food in the restaurant was overpriced and too much salt was used, even for my salt-loving mother-in-law; but many nice restaurants and foodstalls are close-by.

The location is also perfect for going to visit the rest of Penang, or to walk to the old part of town. We loved it and will definitely return." Brenda, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
