A relatively new property in Beijing, The Orchid Hotel offers a one-of-a-kind experience in the city. Conveniently situated in a hutong neighborhood, The Orchid offers quick and easy access to the surrounding shopping and sightseeing venues. Each of the 10 rooms in this small hotel have been carefully designed and include organic toiletries, rainforest shower and comfortable amenities.
The hotel was founded on the idea of combining the needs and interests of locals, expats and visitors. The experience is meant to give guests a taste of real Beijing while allowing them enjoy the comforts of home as well. Because the hotel is small, guests receive friendly and attentive service and get an intimate experience that many other hotels in the city are lacking.
The entire structure has been designed with care, including the lovely courtyard, which is soundproofed so guests can enjoy the ambience without being distracted by the noise of the surrounding neighborhood. The location is convenient to plenty of restaurants, bars and entertainment, and is a short walk to public transportation.
Taxis also abound but you’ll likely want to walk around the neighborhood to get your bearings and experience an authentic piece of Beijing.
There are 10 rooms at the hotel and each has a certain element to recommend it. All rooms come equipped with media servers loaded with movies and music, free wifi and wired high speed internet, under floor heating and air conditioning, complimentary bottomless fruit basket, a rainforest bathroom and sets of organic toiletries.
The quaint courtyard rooms all have access to a garden, while the Lookout’s draw is the view of the nearby Drum and Bell towers.
The Three Gardens comes with access to a private garden. For the most luxurious experience the Orchid has to offer, the Yin & Yang rooms have private garden access and views, respectively.
The Orchid Bar and restaurant are tasteful and intimate, in keeping with the atmsophere in the rest of the hotel. The bar carries wines from Italy and local-inspired beer list, including Tsingtao, the most prominent Chinese beer, and brews crafted right in Beijing.
In addition to the picturesque Drum & Bell Towers, there is plenty to do in the area. Hire a rickshaw for a tour of the hutongs, or hoof it and create your own tour (at least you’ll be sure that you’re not getting ripped off).
Visit Lake Houhai for the closest you’ll get to serene in Beijing and stroll Nanluoguxiang to explore boutique shops and sample the street food.
“The Orchidd was all I could hope from reading the reviews. The staff are great, knowledgable and very friendly. The tea beer they brew was fantastic and the bottle of wine we had was great. Breakfast was also a nice treat as you have a few Western options that were all tempting. You can't really go wrong. There however is a cat on the property which was unexpected as my girlfriend has a severe cat allergy. That was the only dissapointment. Otherwise, I encourage anyone to stay here.” Don E
“I would travel back to Beijing just to stay at this hotel. It is located in a hutong area down a small alley. It is walking distance to many restaurants and central for sightseeing in beijing. The hotel is small and the design and decor is beautiful. As soon as we checked in we extended an extra night. We loved the bar area which was trendy and we had our nightly drink before dinner, snuggle with one of the cats and got to have a chat with one of the friendly staff members. They were so happy to help us with any request we had and to suggest places to go. My partner and I had a wonderful special stay here and would love to be back there soon.” PippaBroome
“I stayed at the Orchid while on a two week business trip in January and loved it so much, I immediately booked it again for my return in April. If you're looking for a pool, gym and room service, then look elsewhere but having stayed at many of those large, impersonal five star business hotels, I was hoping for something more characterful and intimate and the Orchid fits the bill perfectly, with no compromise on the comforts of the larger luxury hotels. The Orchid's beds are the most comfortable of any hotel I have ever stayed at, anywhere in the world. Free VPN wifi provides fast unblocked internet access, a real boon in China. Breakfasts are delicious and distinctly 'Pacific rim' in style and though the Orchid does not have a full kitchen, the staff will bring in delicious food from any of the nearby restaurants. The staff and owners, Joel and Youngcall, are so friendly, helpful and sociable that I feel as though I'll be returning to visit old friends. Part of the Orchid's charm is that it only has a few rooms and now that word is out, booking well in advance has become absolutely essential. If that was not already the case, I'd be very tempted to keep it entirely to myself!” Cavalli-London
