From the moment you arrive at this large former family home to a warm welcome by your local hosts you are treated like family. The buildings are artistically decorated and sympathetically blend into the jungle setting that surrounds them. You will be treated to exceptional home cooked meals and pampered in understated comfort in this otherwise non-conventional resort. Tiger Rock really is one of a kind.Island rainforest hospitality
Tiger Rock is owned by David and Rebecca Wilkinson, who raised a family there and is very much a part of the local community. Your current host and his wife are well respected members of this island community and you will have all the privileges that go along with this, allowing you access to people, temples, and events on the island that you would otherwise miss.
The forest on Pangkor is special in that it has now been left to grow without interference and so has a great variety of tree and plant species including many old Diptocarp trees. These trees are the main reason the island has such a strong population of Hornbills, providing nesting holes for the Greater Hornbill, the Wreathed Hornbill, Black Hornbill, Rhinoceros Hornbill and the very common Southern Pied Hornbills. Giant Ficus trees provide food for all.
The bird life on the island is varied with many migratory birds coming through the jungle. One of the most stunning is the Asian Paradise Flycatcher in its white morph stage.
3 houses are available for private rental. The houses have their own living and dining areas (the Studio shares those of the Main House). In addition they share a large library pavilion below the Main House, and the fantastic pool and Pool House which is perfectly situated with views over the bamboo and jungle. The Pool House is the heart and meeting place at Tiger Rock and becomes the central dining area when all houses are in use. It is stunning at night when candlelit for barbeques and seafood dinners.
The Main House
The Wilkinson family’s private house is available to hire as a whole. This is a large colorful, rambling, wooden house built in the traditional kampung style, and is perfect for a family holiday. It contains a master bedroom and balcony, and a large children’s room, both with ensuite bathrooms. Rooms are fitted with both fans and air conditioning. The living areas include character-filled spaces for dining, relaxing and playing. Satellite T.V. is fitted and is a useful distraction at times, for the children.
Previously Rebecca’s creative Studio, this building is situated behind the Main House. This is a great airy space with lots of French doors and a funky ‘rock’ bathroom. For larger family groups it becomes part of the Main House, but is absolutely perfect for couples who want privacy. French doors open onto a private lawn space with tropical views over the valley and jungle. In the mornings, you may just open all the doors, lie in bed and snooze with the jungle in front of you.
The Wilkinson's private guesthouse, is surrounded by mature trees and palms and has views across the sea.. Built after the style of a colonial tea estate bungalow the 4 large private suites, all with ensuite bathrooms and verandas, are fitted with fans and air-conditioning. 2 of these bedrooms have an adjoining door which opens them up as a large family suite. Hill House is made up of 3 pavilions on stone wall terraces. The central living, dining and kitchen pavilion provides a totally open air jungle experience with views through to the sea.
The Pool House
The Pool House Chalet is located at the end and to the side of the pool. It was previously a shop has been turned into a wonderful little room with its own veranda for those who do not want to be far from the Pool, or cannot walk up and down the slopes to the Main House.
Meals are provided for you at Tiger Rock and your hosts are excellent natural cooks who will combine the fresh local seafood and ingredients available on Pangkor to conjure up some truly exceptional food. You can expect a cooked menu that ranges from Chinese, Malay, Indian and Colonial recipes that vary on the day depending on what is in season and available.
For those with dietary requirements, your hosts can provide delicious vegetarian menus and can also cater for gluten free meals. Just let them know if you have any particular food allergies. Children's meals can be provided for separately.
Tiger Rock favourites include: fish curries, chicken curries, masala tosai's, nasi lemak, gula Melaka, steamed fish Chinese style, tempura vegetables, deep fried calamari in tempura batter, lemon chicken, pisang goreng, drunken prawns, soft shell crabs, homemade chilli sauce, fish stuffed with sambal, lemang, fish with bunga kantan, fried chicken in pandan leaves, nasi goreng, mee goreng and kuey teow soup!
Mealtimes are always a surprise because at Tiger Rock there is no set menu.
All guests are taken on a guided tour of the island upon arrival. The tour is pretty comprehensive and you should go away feeling like you definitely know how Pangkor Island works.
There is a lot to see and it is really fascinating to learn that there is so much activity and culture on this little island. Expect to be shown the fishing boat jetties, the ikan bilis drying and sorting areas (Pangkor is famous for this dried whitebait type fish), the boat building yards, all the various temples, the markets and obviously the beaches.
There is also an opportunity to try some of the breakfast food at Sungei Pinang Kechil (SPK) where the street is set up in the morning with stalls selling different foods.
Your host’s local knowledge will also give you the opportunity to observe the local temples. Local people are incredibly friendly and welcome you into their various ceremonies.
"The resort is small and the Studio was very private and quiet. Creatively furnished and you can spend a long time just enjoying all there is to see. Open the doors in the morning and you are directly connected to the jungle. The pool is excellent with very comfortable seating area. But best of all is the team who look after you from the moment you set foot on the island. Hospitality with a big capital H! Immediately on arrival we were treated to an excellent lunch and this was only the starter. Do not expect 5* luxury at this place but do expect to gets all the things a five star resort cannot possibly offer." Dutch 1505, Netherlands
"Many superlatives have already been used to describe Tiger Rock and I agree with them all and some! What a wonderful magical place, made even more special by Mohan, Bavani, Paarthi and Seela and their attentive and warm hospitality. Nothing was too much trouble and so many thoughtful and unexpected touches, from water and towels for the beach, to cooling drinks magically appearing by the pool and even a bag of sandwiches and water for the long trip after our stay. This is not a conventional hotel or resort - it's so much more and so much better. My only reluctance in writing this review is that I encourage too many people to go, so when I want to go back it will be fully booked!! But it would be too selfish not to share this magical place and wonderful people. Room Tip: They're all lovely!" Neal T, UK
